EC90 Components

Design:  Larry Koo, Chuck Teixeria
Project lead: Larry Koo
Year of product launch 2015

The goal set for EC90 carbon fiber stem and seat post are to set the benchmark for the lightest competitive cycling components in the world.  It is designed to withstand years of rigorous abuse on racecourses like Paris-Roubaix. In fact, the EC90 class components are so strong it will hold up just fine to cyclocross and XC mountain bike racing.

The stem comes in multiple lengths for fitting various body sizes.  For the 100-millimeter version,  the weight is reduced down to just 115-grams.  The technology used to deliver such impressive aspect ratio is called the TaperWall™ technology.  The inner side of the carbon fiber side wall is smoothed out the old stepped-style tapers with seamless, fluid changes in thickness. By doing this, many of the stress points typical of the older design are negated, thereby making a much more durable bar at the same weight, if not a touch lighter. All metal alloy hardware is made of titanium to further optimize the weight reduction. Last but not least, the aluminum face plate is designed with Easton’s stem’s proprietary Top-Lock™ feature to maximize the handlebar/stem Interface which gives the rider grip stability.

The Easton EC category is the top of the line cycling components range.  It has established a distinct iconic design language to be influence to rest of the component products.  The overall body of the carbon stem is crafted to be sleek and yet masculine. Starting from the front of the stem, the raised details on the carbon body where it housed the screw bosses blends in seamlessly from the aluminum face plate and into the carbon body.  The scallop recess on each of the side wall is designed not only for cosmetic reason. It helps to increase the side profile structural integrity to withstand the tensile strength applied from twisting movement. The overall design of the stem has to be scalable to adopted 6 different length sizes range from 90mm to 130mm. It was crucial to maintain a consistent the look and feel throughout the range.
